ZISSOUS: She-Devil: CDEP

Behold, if you will, five keen tunes “recorded in our living room” by sublimely hilarious low-energy comedian Georgina Smith and her consort. The duo chugs along in a mid-tempo Ramones-ish manner (case in point: One of these five songs is a cover of “I Wanna Live,” which is something like the 128th-best Ramones song ever), while dropping dreamily breathless lines like “if you’re so inclined / to be my Valentine / gotta let you know / best let that dream go” and “rather you kiss me too soon than not at all” on the listener like regular folks drop caramel corn into the couch cushions. The last song is a folkish departure that sounds kinda like Peter, Paul & Mary (hold the Peter and Paul) and solidifies this disc’s status as “rather charming.” I haven’t enjoyed a CD with flowers on the cover this much in quite some time. Bonus points for DQing that potential Valentine for gross chewing.BEST SONG: “My Valentine.” BEST SONG TITLE: “She-Devil.” FANTASTIC AMAZING TRIVIA FACT: The band is named, of course, after the main character in the Wes Anderson film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. –Rev.
