YELLOW HOUSE: Songs from Limbo: CS

May 23, 2017

Whoa, how cool is this? Unexpected blend of aggressive post-hardcore and… dream pop, I guess? Throw some shoegaze in there, but take out all the boring. Disaffected shouting is layered with echoey mumbles and murmurs and other sounds I can’t quite identify. The melodies are simultaneously cheerful and foreboding—“Inconvenient” could be the soundtrack to living in a dream dimension and beginning to realize something is not quite right. There are lyrics about centrifuges, lobotomies, and recycling. A little bit of a Sonic Youth vibe at times, but I haven’t heard anything quite like this before. So weird and cool. –Indiana Laub (Self-released, yellowhousebuffalo.bandcamp.com)
