WUGAZI: 13 Chambers: LP

Mar 19, 2024

I think we all have those go-to albums we can rely on to make us feel a certain way. For the last ten years or so, one of my top “mood-forcers” has been 13 Chambers by Wugazi. This project is the brainchild of a couple of Minneapolis musician/DJs who decided the world needed a mix (I can’t stand the term “mash-up”) of Wu Tang Clan and Fugazi. On behalf of the world, we did. The album boasts thirteen (duh) jams that seamlessly meld the top drawer rhyming of Wu Tang with various grooves throughout Fugazi’s catalog. It’s mesmerizing how well this all fits together. There were definitely times in the ’90s when both Enter The Wu Tang (36 Chambers) and 13 Songs would be on my CD changer at the same time. Now they just happen to be in the same songs. You may ask yourself why I’m reviewing this well over a decade after it came out. Well, surprisingly, this recently appeared on vinyl for the first time ever. I’m unsure of the legality of the project itself, let alone any kind of physical release, so I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to get my hands on a copy of this. My hope would be that members of both Wu Tang Clan and Fugazi would be able to see the merit in this unique interpretation and be okay with it. Imagine them coming together and doing a live rendition! Regardless, it’ll remain something I recommend to anyone who will listen, while it stays in my constant rotation. –Ty Stranglehold (Eggroll, juno.co.uk/labels/Eggroll+US)
