WILL WOOD: The Normal Album: LP

Quite an ambitious stab here: big, blustery ’70s concept rock filtered through modern Broadway “hit” sensibilities. Influences pop in and out throughout—Elton at his most boisterous, Grease, ska, the odd Latin rhythm and, yes, hip hop—coupled with dense lyrics addressing identity politics, gender, mental illness, love and more. Six seconds in, I fully expected to hate this with a passion previously held only for Brussels sprouts. By a minute and change, he’d won me over. Ambitious it is, and ultimately successful. –Jimmy Alvarado (Say-10, say-10.com)
