WHIRLYWIRLD: Complete Discography 1978-80: LP

The title here sums things up nicely: a collection of this Australian post-punk band’s recordings culled from a handful of singles and EPs released between 1978-80. Though comparatively smaller than others, their oeuvre is nonetheless pretty meaty, opening with a kinda dark synth-wave type ditty, a second track that recalls one of Chrome’s more aggressive moments, and then sliding into assorted arty-gloom explorations in the direction of Bauhaus jams like “Spy in the Cab” and “Sanity Assassin.” Not a dull moment on here and it leaves you wishing they’d slogged it out a bit longer so there’d be more tunes and just to see where time and experience would’ve taken their sound. All told, this is fuckin’ choice listening. –Jimmy Alvarado (HoZac, hozacrecords.com)
