VIKING MOSES: Cruel Child: CD

The solemnity of Leonard Cohen, the bright-eyed ambition of Josh Ritter, and the warbling, over the top dramatics of Spencer Moody. Quiet, constrained stuff with at least two wheels constantly dangling off the precipice of Navel-Gazing Sad Guy Folk Rock, but without the vehicle ever quite tumbling to its doom. Violent Femmes’ Three album seems a good starting point. I’m almost annoyed at the fact that I enjoyed vast swaths of this—it seems pretty dang overwrought and affected at times, but this guy and his band are admittedly really good at what they’re doing. Prepare to get bummed, folks. –Keith Rosson (Epifo)
