VARIOUS ARTISTS: Ô - A Tribute to Ô Paon and Geneviève Castrée: 2 x LP

Sep 22, 2022

Back story: Geneviève Castrée was a French Canadian artist who died of pancreatic cancer in 2016 and released music under the names of Ô Paon and Woelv. She died quite young at the age of thirty-five. This two-LP release is a tribute to her and her music—from her extended artist family and friends—and all profits are to be donated to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Now, the review! Side 1 starts with Lori Goldston’s “Fluere iii” and it’s spooky, experimental, with super ambient classical strings with discordant suspense (think violins!), followed by artists Sheahan Drive and Mount Eerie that carry on with the same effect. Flip to Side 2, and a switch goes off in my head/ears as to why this was sent to Razorcake. Cloud Rat offers a straight-up hardcore rager with an eerie throb underlayer in “Le Panne.” There’s also a notable offering from Thou, think an angelic Ratka, percussion-heavy, slow-churn banger in “Manches Courtes.” Side 3 starts with a Björk/Slits-style dreamy sound from band New Issue’s “Les Perdants/Les Perdantes” and follows with an exquisitely quirky song from Le Fruit Vert’s “Psychiatrie.” Other notables are the arthouse noise from The Drink Up, Honey and Thou’s “Arbres Muets,” which is more quirky pop compared to their previous song on the comp. Weird and enjoyable. –Camylle (Ô Paon)
