UNCIVIL SOCIETY, THE: Spectacle, Inc.: CD and booklet

May 25, 2021

The incessant progression of A_non73 and his Uncivil Society project are inspirational to me: here’s a guy who becomes curious about something—philosophy, music, baseball, whatever—does a bunch of research, and writes a concept album about it one or two times a year. Spectacle, Inc. focuses on Guy DeBord and the Situationists, and their dismissal of the idea that “advanced capitalism’s apparent successes—such as technological advancement, increased income, and increased leisure—could ever outweigh the social dysfunction and degradation of everyday life that it simultaneously inflicted.” Because these ideas have come to the fore in the past few years, I can imagine this record being a mindblow to people who haven’t heard such a direct, succinct discussion of them before. Musically, this one is a little less droney than the previous effort, kinda jaunty in a way that reminds me of the more musical Negativland numbers, with a sardonic vocal wit and delivery emphasizing that connection (plus, lots of “I Wanna Be Your Dog”-style keyboards in the background, further upping the conservable ante). Don’t sleep! –Michael T. Fournier (Suburban Utopia Projects)
