In this third book of poems by Matt Mauldin, formerly of the great Southern band Car Vs. Driver, I’m struck by the way that his focus zooms. What’s seemingly a poem about nature is suddenly taken to a different scale, as if the camera has been pulled back, hanging over the earth. Or, alternately, how a poem about a wooded path finds its focus instead on the bloodstream, like a miracle-of-science filmstrip in a tiled classroom. No matter the focus, large or small, Mauldin’s work continues to evolve as he makes unexpected connections easily and suddenly. –Michael T. Fournier (Hidden Partner Press, bobrobart.bigcartel.com)
