Réunion Island, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, is best known musically for African Sega music. Fascinatingly, there’s a punk underground in this Creole region, with Tukatukas at the forefront. They play fairly mainstream fast melodic punk, sometimes infused with horns, but there’s urgency to their songwriting rarely displayed by bands other than those emerging from areas with new burgeoning scenes. The double LP labels the four sides as T, U, K, and A, so don’t ignorantly play the last side first or you’ll forever live in shame and embarrassment. –Art Ettinger (GC, gcrecords.com)
