TOMS, THE: The 1979 Sessions: LP

The story goes that producer Tommy Marolda was scheduled to record a demo for the band Smithereens over a weekend in 1979. They cancelled so, left with some free time, he recorded some tunes of his own, playing all the instruments and singing, which resulted in the first LP by The Toms, now a sought-after power pop rarity. The session was so productive that it apparently resulted in two more albums, the third of which being under discussion here. Fourteen pitch-perfect pop gems here, all hinting at various times Big Star, Beatles, Byrds, and others— dreamy, to-the-point and, crammed with hooks so sweet you’re gonna need a couple o’ root canals by the time it’s over. Great, great, great. –Jimmy Alvarado (Feel It)
