TIGER HELICIDE: Saturday Night Mind Control…with a Vengeance!: CD and Lion Tankacide: CD

Jan 24, 2024

I think these two new offerings from Tiger Helicide are most appropriately dealt with together, so here we go. About a year and a half ago, I reviewed a compilation CD by these guys. I was mixed. I wrote, “Most of it doesn’t make me stand up and take notice,” but I liked the record for “its spirit of senseless destruction and self-deprecation; Tiger Helicide revel in their trashy yet charming unprofessionalism.” So, Saturday Night Mind Control lands dead-center in my year-and-a-half-old review, and I stand by those words and lazily repurpose them for this new record. Lion Tankacide is something toooootally different, however; here we have a punk rock version of Phish, sort of, I guess. The songs here are long, live jam-like offerings that would probably be more sensible and meaningful for me if I were familiar with their live show. Lion Tankacide isn’t bad, and I rather enjoyed it at times, but I feel as though I wouldn’t ever need to hear this more than once. But if you’re into these guys, you’ll probably want to pick it upfor its idiosyncratic (or so it seems to me) value. –The Lord Kveldulfr (Murder Boy)
