SUEDE RAZORS, THE: All the hits…and Misses: LP

You can get in an argument with this theory, but I believe good oi or pub rock utilizes the roots of bands most skinheads would claim not to like. The original oi bands were not influenced as much by bands laden with tough guy posturing as they were by bands working class kids listened to. So when I say the first two songs on this album: “Here She Comes” and “Long Shot Kid” could easily be Kiss songs, someone could be offended. This album is a complete discography: it contains all the singles with their short, full-length album tacked on at the back end. The next two songs on the album are from a different single representing a different era of the band. These two songs utilize more punk tropes, but I can’t help it, once I hear Paul Stanley in the singer, I can’t not hear it. I know a lot of punks hate Kiss. I struggle with my fandom. One day you’ll hear a Kiss song you never heard before that Kim Fowley helped write and you’ll think: Kiss was better than I remembered. In the case of The Suede Razors, I think this is a good record for fans of the Bovver Boogie. It’s got some solid songs on it. But I also close my eyes and see his shirtless, star-make-up-ed face sashaying across the stage with too many bandanas flicking the air in his wake singing along to “(I’m a) Bovver Boy.” These guys look pretty tough, so I hope I never have to answer for this, but sorry man, when you guys yell “so-ci-e-taay” the Starchild really shows through. –Billups Allen (Pirates Press,
