STEPHEN EL REY: Poor Born: 7”

The cover of this album makes me think of the movie Cry-Baby. The black and white imagery on the cover depicts El Rey brooding on his motorcycle, and the back has him lighting a match with a cigarette in his mouth. Given these two images, I already had an idea of what this would sound like, and I was right. The two-song EP features “Poor Born” and “Drunk Again.” El Rey’s voice sounds heavily influenced by ‘50s rock’n’roll. If you like reverb vocals, classic rock guitar, and a heavy influence on baritone sax, then this is for you. –Cynthia Pinedo (pigbabyrecords.com)
