STAPLED SPINE #18, $5, 5½” x 8½”, copied, 32 pgs.

Despite only being a casual horror fan, I found this subscription-distributed horror zine quite entertaining. It has a solid body of reviews, which at least in this issue appears to be the primary focus, with a nice balance between film and literature/comics. Outside of reviews, of particular interest is the brief interview with Katie Rasmussen, who was the location manager for 2022’s Significant Other. I’m a sucker for behind-the-scenes shit like this, and maybe you are too, especially in the horror context where location can become so iconic. I also really loved the aesthetics of this zine; whoever does the layout does a great job balancing the economy of space with freaky cut-and-paste aesthetic touches and cover images/still from the media being review. Stapled Spine feels like an homage to pre-internet fan culture, a print oasis in the frankly overwhelming digital media swill. –jimmy cooper (stapledspine.com)
