I love that there are bands which have been around for decades that I have never heard of. Special Pillow (which is a horrible name, by the way) play psychedelic pop, which may explain why I’m not as familiar with them, as it isn’t my scene. Still, after twenty-five years, the band has their sound down well. There’s not just guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Special Pillow throws in strings, horns, and even a sitar. I was surprised by how catchy and smooth it was; like if yacht rock smoked more weed and maybe dropped a tab of acid. I can imagine getting high, laying out on the lawn in my bare feet, and watching the clouds move slowly across the sky while listening to World’s Finest. Will I ever do that? No. But I can imagine it. And it doesn’t seem so bad. –Kurt Morris (Zofko)
