I will preface this for all you non-Canadians reading this. Sloan is a band from Halifax, Nova Scotia that was scooped up in the early ’90s rush to sign any and all bands with an “alternative” flavor. I’m not sure how well known they became in the rest of the world, but here in Canada they became one of the biggest rock’n’roll bands going. Here we are pretty much thirty years later and any semblance of the punky indie band that got in the van and eked it out coast to coast is gone… or so I thought. This One’s an Original only has two originals on it. The rest of the album is made up of covers of their favorite ’80s hardcore songs. Angry Samoans, Minor Threat, 7 Seconds, Descendents, The Nils, Black Flag, Gray Matter, and Bad Religion are all represented and hammered out quick and dirty. The aforementioned originals also sound era appropriate and fit in nicely. Sloan and I may have parted ways some years back, but it’s nice to know they haven’t forgotten where they started. I can only imagine how fun it would be to see them play a set of these covers live someday. If you can find a copy, it’s highly recommended. –Ty Stranglehold (Murderecords / sloanmusic.com)
