SLEEPCRAWLER: Self-titled: 7” EP

Was totally expecting the opener, “HTN,” to pan out as some sorta screechy doom rock sludge stuff, but it quickly took a sharp turn into a weird amalgamation of shoegaze and blustery ’90s indie rock… and I mean that in a good way. The flip, “Albatross,” is largely along the same lines, starting off before crescendoing with the whole band just pummeling their instruments. “Gorgeous” is not a word I bandy about often, but it definitely fits here. Color me pleasantly surprised. –Jimmy Alvarado (Phratry)
