RUBS, THE: (Dust): LP

My initial knee jerk reaction to this was, “Wow, this really has that ’70s power pop sound really dialed in,” but that’s not quite right. I mean, it’s true—you could slip “What Did I Do” or “I Want You” onto some “Power Pop Hits” compilation and no one would blink—but they’re dipping toes in other pools here. As it rolls through, you can hear more modern, albeit stripped-down, sensibilities at play one minute, followed by something that sounds like Thin Lizzy outtakes, then Beatlesque leads on songs that could’ve been slipped onto a Beat LP, and so on. What it all boils down to is smart, spare pop that relies more on craft than huge-budget production bells and whistles that sounds familiar without sounding like a tribute band. –Jimmy Alvarado (HoZac,
