RAZORBLADES AND ASPIRIN #15, $10, 8½” x 11”, printed, 80 pgs.

This is a slick, professional zine on heavy paper. It’s photo-heavy and the photos are well-chosen, high-energy live shots. I wish each of the photos was more clearly credited and the subjects of the photos were printed more clearly instead of in tiny light print in the corner, sometimes on top of a light part of the image. The interviews lean heavily on punk photographers. The first three are disappointing, as they ask the same exact questions of the different photographers. The next though, with photographer Brooke Smith, is much more personalized and the questions dip into some interesting recollections of the NYC hardcore scene of the 1980s. I would have loved a longer interview with her. There aren’t as many technical questions about photography in her interview either, which might be something photographers want to know (this zine is obviously really targeting photographers), but as a layperson has limited appeal. The band interviews are also more well-researched and cover a diverse selection of bands like Gel, Vidro and Tozcos. Also, randomly, this zine smells really good. It’s got that fresh magazine smell cranked up to 11. I could just sniff this thing. –Emma Alice Johnson (PO Box 23173, Richmond, VA 23223)
