PROUD PARENTS: At Home with…: CS

May 24, 2022

There’s a lot more going on here than I remember going on the last time I listened to a Proud Parents album. There’s sort of a punkish base layer, keeping the instrumentation and production from getting so ambitious that they’d cause things to sail off into threatening unfamiliarity, and then there’s kind of an indie pop layer on top where things unspool at the time and method of their choosing and the heck with your adolescent musical constraints. Scattered elsewhere are miscellaneous flavor sensations like Feelies-esque percussion bits, lunges into Midwest-Beat-esque country harmony ravers, and whatever the hell else the chef decided to whip up that day. I sort of want to say that this sounds like what the Soup Dragons Hang-Ten! album would sound like were it from Wisconsin and not Scotland, but I haven’t really thought that one out super-intensively yet and would hate to sell the kids a bum steer. If there’s only one cassette that you don’t smash open so you can whip the spools of tape out the window at frat boys this year, let this be the one! BEST SONG: “Badnight Loving.” Oh, I get it. Like the band Goodnight Loving. Right. Carry on. BEST SONG TITLE: “Cellophane.” I get that, too! Like the third Troggs album! Right? Carry on. FANTASTIC AMAZING TRIVIA FACT: “Professionally dubbed, self-released cassette!” –Rev. Nørb (Self-released)
