This zine tracks the life of forgotten jazz bandleader Ben Irving via postcards and other ephemera. It’s a wild read, with no background info or context. It just dives right in. Even after digging around online for a bit, I’m still not entirely sure what’s happening here, but it’s incredibly interesting if you, like me, enjoy random history related to forgotten entertainers. There’s a tangent about Florida condo culture of the 1960s as well as a brief foray into “bawdy party records,” which I didn’t even know was a thing and I will probably now become obsessed with. (Oh wait. I looked one up on Discogs and it’s almost a hundred dollars.) It closes with a postcard from Michigan’s upper peninsula and an examination of how the postcard image compares to the same location today. –Emma Alice Johnson (PO Box 1309, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48804)
