POROUS MIRROR: Sunk Heaven: CS

This tape contains a serious dive into the dark avant-garde. The whole tape has an analog feel, evoking the sense of dread I first felt when I was turned on to Throbbing Gristle and Coil. The cassette starts off with “Cotton,” a very brutal-sounding dirge with big drum echo and warbly vocals. “Fallouts Perish” follows with a digital bass loop and slightly atonal string blasts. “Mal Absorption” follows with more mechanical drums and big sounds framing a variety of keyboard stabs. Like Throbbing Gristle, the tape doesn’t rely on just noise plugged into song structure. The songs are very well thought out and the album has a great variety of flow from track to track. I don’t know the modern “post industrial” scene well, but if that’s what they’re going for, they nailed it. Great tape. –Billups Allen (Crass Lips, crasslipsrecords.org)
