POPE JOAN: Happy + Relaxed: CS

I don’t know, man. Ten songs of indie rock with vocals run through a filter and riffs that are cribbed—directly or not—from ’60s and ’70s rock songs. Reminds me at times of Tom Grrrl, a great band, and it’s all well done (“Worse Than Me” has some oomph to it), but the majority of the songs live in that half-lit land between fully baring their teeth and immersing themselves in pure saccharine pop, so we’re stuck with almost getting enmeshed in both worlds, but not quite getting access to either. –Keith Rosson (Rhodehouse)
