PERENNIAL: In the Midnight Hour: LP/CD/CS

Mar 15, 2022

I love this. This is Perennial’s second album, and the trio from Connecticut has produced a dozen high energy tracks which blur the lines between dance punk and post-punk. The urgent shout-sung vocals of Chelsey Hahn and Chad Jewett add to the edgy intensity of the songs, creating a sensation of what it must be like to have minor electric shocks racing around your body. At only twenty-two minutes long, In the Midnight Hour is a hit-and-run experience, resulting in sheer exhaustion at what has been crammed into such a small space of time. I’d be intrigued to see how these songs came across live as there’s a lot going on and it sounds like they’d need to be octopi to replicate them on stage. All in all, this album is exhilarating, fun, and gets me up off my backside. –Rich Cocksedge (Self-released, [email protected] / Redscroll, [email protected], redscrollrecords.com)
