PANIC BODIES: Self-titled: CS

From Toronto comes a solid demo of ’80s HXC sound and structure without being contrived. Gone are the shitty HXC shortcuts. There are a lot of clever riffs mined in a short runtime. The chorus of “Honest Ed’s” is driven by wicked East Bay Ray style-discordance. There’s a nice minimalist solo in play as well. “No Capital” gets trickier while maintaining a tinge of punks-at-the-beach vibe. “Sickly Spring” ends the tape with a slow number hovering in the arena of better early Dischord slow jams. Five songs and no clunkers. It sounds good without feeling overproduced. There’s a bit of Wipers in there as well. Really great demo for your boombox. –Billups Allen (Self-released)
