ÖPNV: Self-titled: CS

The name of this band, Öffentlicher Personennahverkehr (local public transit), makes me think that a lot more people than just me listen almost exclusively to German post-punk and new wave on trains. ÖPNV’s self-titled cassette is less dance-inducing than most, but still heavily supported by deep, groovy bass lines. Instead, a foreboding set of five no wave songs lead me down a dark, jazzy, synthy alley where I get the feeling I’m going to get a shocking plot twist. Each song feels like the buildup to the final climax in an art school suspense film. If the visual aesthetic of “neon goth” had a soundtrack, this is the vibe I’d be expecting. –Lorien Lamarr (Phantom, phantomrecords.bandcamp.com)
