Athlone, Ireland’s Nomatrix have put together a record assembling previously released varia and some unreleased stuff, as well. Much of this comes off as fast, relatively polished punk/hardcore, not quite consistently melodic, with vocal harmonies and cadences at times reminiscent of Bad Religion. Other songs tend to have a more lurching, quirky aspect to them, but in a very good way. Lyrically, Nomatrix tends to follow tried-and-true punk rock tropes such as the evils of conformity, daily ennui, thinking for yourself, et cetera, and they have a sound that you’ve heard plenty of times before, but they don’t sound derivative, clichéd, or stale.
