MR. T EXPERIENCE, THE: King Dork Approximately the Album: CD/LP

Jul 25, 2018

Dr. Frank writes young adult novels? Since when? Granted, I’m not a fan of MTX but I figured I would’ve read about that at some point. Alas, I only found out because this is a concept album based on Frank’s book, King Dork Approximately, which is a sequel to his popular book, King Dork. Fun fact: This may be the first time I’ve listened to a MTX album more than once. I’m sure someone, somewhere, in high school played them for me but they were never a band I got into. So my initial impression is a reminder of how many pop punk bands from the ‘80s and ‘90s who were influenced by The Ramones just sound so radio-friendly. There seems to be little that is offensive about them; they want to make their version of pop music but not be part of the mainstream. And that’s great. MTX is a capable band and solid at what they do, but I often question how punk these bands are. I suppose if you are a fan of MTX, though, this is meant for you. I, on the other hand, am incredibly intrigued about Dr. Frank’s novels and will be checking them out. –Kurt Morris (Sounds Rad)
