Cry Mama is the result of once-yearly meetings between the members of Monkey Power Trio from 2018–2020. The result is a chill, lo-fi record that feels like the meeting of old friends. You can hear it’s laced with inside jokes and references only the three members really care about but that’s what makes listening to Cry Mama so special; the listener is being let in on the joke. According to the write up on the back of the LP, whatever comes of these yearly sessions is what gets recorded; “flaws, imperfections, and missed opportunities abound.” It’s the flaws and imperfections that add to the listening experience. We can listen to a perfectly produced album anytime we want. What Monkey Power Trio have given us is performance art, a collection of their unique music making that is both eccentric and comforting. –Caitlin Santavenere (Pocahontas Swamp Machine, no address listed)
