MIKE REP & THE QUOTAS: Hellbender: LP

Jan 18, 2017

Subtitled “Rare and Unreleased 1975-78,” this is just that: an album’s worth of obscure demo and “basement” recordings very much in line, sound and execution-wise, as their much-ballyhooed “Rocket to Nowhere” single. Sound is, of course, varying shades of rough, but the tunes stand as solid evidence to refute to oft-believed fallacy that there was a single, “classic punk” sound of the era during which these recordings were made. Fans, completists, and historians will dig this. The rest of us will likely nod in respect and move on. –Jimmy Alvarado (HoZac, hozacrecords.com)
