Fantastic realism in modern America. Demons, robotic pilgrim ex-boyfriends, bisexuals: your standard fantasy offerings. There is a wickedly smart satire lingering under the water. It breaches the surface about once per story in this collection. This is a series of tales with interconnected characters, but no through line. You’re examining several angles of the same world, with one or two of the same faces to connect them. I’m unsure if this is part of a longer-running series, but it sure feels like there is a narrative that exists beyond this little ensemble. One joke about a racist tattoo had me guffawing with laughter. Recommended. –Gwen Static (Andrew Neal, PO Box 435, Hillsborough, NC 27278, meetincomics.com)
