Extra Fancy arrived on the music scene in the early 1990s just as I began a sabbatical from exhibiting my work. And it had been years since I had photographed any punk bands. Several years ago, I met Extra Fancy’s front man Brian Grillo through a mutual friend. We didn’t know anything about each other’s punk past, but it slowly came out as our friendship grew.
In 2016 Extra Fancy reunited for a show at Cafe NELA, a venue that was perfect for punk—small, crowded, and loud.
I had not heard the music of Extra Fancy and a few days after the show I told Brian that if The Doors had never existed, Extra Fancy would have been the punk equivalent of that band—intelligent, unique sound and, of course, gorgeous front man!
