I’ve been trying to catch Jabber for years, but being bi-coastal they haven’t done many road tours. None, actually. Up until now, my only options to see them play were at FEST or to be in California. Given that my FEST schedule never allows me to watch an entire set and I can’t yet teleport from Baltimore, neither of these options was ideal for me. So, I was beyond thrilled to see them post a house show in Washington, DC on their first-ever road tour.
Jabber released Forever in 2018 and immediately the standout to me was “Breathless.” It’s a great example of what Jabber does best: infectious pop punk melodies that beg you to dance underneath striking hooks that beg you sing along. Put simply, it’s a party, which is why seeing them at a house show in a party environment fits their sound and attitude perfectly.
I’m also a fan of pop culture references, so “Caesar,” a song based on a scene in the movie Mean Girls was a quick favorite. The measure of any good party, though, is the level of participation by all its attendees and in this Jabber has a secret weapon in the form of a Spice Girls cover song. For this Danny puts down her guitar and reaches out into the crowd for singalongs and solos, getting everyone involved. I love a basement party, but I love a basement party all that much more when I get to sing the Spice Girls with Jabber and—to be honest—that’s kind of the vibe I get from Jabber. They are about bringing together all the fun things they enjoy, mixing them together, and then sharing the result with all their friends.
