I never listened to Enemy You besides songs that would pop up on comps and mix CDs from friends. It wasn’t intentional, but it’s true that I just don’t know their music. And it also has nothing to do with whether I liked them or not, because these songs are great. I think I was just overloaded with music and this is a band that slipped through the cracks for me. Honestly it’s stuff like this EP of covers that helps keep those bands alive, especially for younger generations who might not have ever heard of them. I think The Lillingtons would have happily covered these songs in any circumstance, though it’s much more important and powerful to be doing it as a tribute to Enemy You’s singer David Jones who took his own life in 2015. So look, I can’t sit here and tell you whether The Lillingtons did justice to these tracks, but I feel in my guts that they did. I read that Kody Templeman (Lillingtons, Teenage Bottlerocket) and David Jones even started out as pen pals some twenty-five years ago. These six Enemy You covers are fantastic and I’m realizing that I need to dig into the originals, as well as their full discography and After School Special (David’s previous band). And if for some reason you’re only here for The Lillingtons, they’ve included their EP Project 313 as bonus content on the CD. Proceeds go to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline. –Kayla Greet (Red Scare)
