Western Mass’s Landowner is one of my favorite active bands, what with their conceptual delivery and their insane, stop-on-a-dime musicianship. Impressive Almanac is a vinyl reissue showcasing the genesis of the project—Dan Shaw put together an album’s worth of songs as a solo act back in 2016 and passed the tape around, eventually solidifying the project as a full band. This slab includes all of the urgency and seasick-inducing off-kilter constructions of the later stuff, with an 8-bit sounding drum machine making things even more frantic. –Michael T.
