KOLYA: Self-titled: LP

Mar 10, 2023

Late ’90s Boston was such fertile ground for great music that bands were easily overlooked. Kolya was a fixture on the emo scene, the city’s Caulfield Records signing, but they were overshadowed by other, larger touring bands. It’s great that their debut LP has been re-pressed, because the music holds up well: atonal melodies picked out on guitar over lurching rhythms, with reedy and/or bellowing vox on top. Familiar genre tropes, to be sure, but with a particular mix and timbre that made the band sound unlike other members of the cohort. –Michael T. Fournier (Self-released, kolya-the-band.bandcamp.com)
