The Smoking Popes’ Josh Caterer offers up, with the help of some friends and relatives, a live-streamed show at Chicago’s Space; the set list consists of Popes tunes and various other standards by Etta James, Sinatra, Willie Nelson, et al. The tone of the performance has a more traditional and somewhat jazzy feel to it, as if influenced heavily by early- to mid-’50s pop records. And while that sound doesn’t transform me into a bundle of spastic vibration like my favorite records do, it’s still a sound that I dig, so I’m giving this one my stamp of approval. –The Lord Kveldulfr (Pravda)
