JEAN CAFFEINE: Love. What Is It?: CD

Jean Caffeine came out of Austin’s alt-country scene, but this EP hops around between genres for each song, mostly settling into an offbeat sort of rudimentary, Burroughs-quoting power pop. There’s a fun cover of “The Kids Are Alright,” as well as some surprises like the buzzy synth lead on “I Always Cry on Thursday” (which is lyrically basically “Friday I’m In Love” without the romance). Fans of quirky and eclectic singer-songwriter stuff might be into this. –Indiana Laub (Self-released, [email protected])
