J. MARINELLI: Putting the World to Rights: LP

Nov 15, 2022

It’s hard to talk about one-man bands without some element of novelty act or parlor trick coming into play. Former (and, if the rumors are to be believed, present!) Samuel guitarist J. Marinelli manages the trick and then some. While playing bass drum, snare, and hi-hat with his feet, he belts out songs and plays guitar at the same time. These tunes have a comfortable feel, like you’ve heard them for all your life, blending elements of Americana, alternative rock, anti-folk, and punk throughout. Songs like “Where They’d Have Us” and “What Columbus Wants” are cut from the same cloth as Fables-era R.E.M., and “The Year of Fucking Up” would fit right in on the strongest Frank Black solo records. With all this said, it’s unfair to compare J.’s stuff to other artists, because his voice and approach are singular. If this album is any indication, he must slay live. J., play Cape Cod! –Michael T.
