IRREVERSIBLE ENTANGLEMENTS: Open the Gates: LP

Jan 05, 2022

The second album of revolutionary spoken-word jazz by this Philly-based group, with a crack band fronted by underground rap hero Moor Mother. The music still nods to the far-out jazz of Archie Shepp and Ornette Coleman, but stretches farther into the cosmos than they did on their debut, all while maintaining an exciting sense of forward motion. Moor Mother’s voice is commanding and grave, giving the songs a heaviness like the best dub reggae. Even if the idea of spoken word over jazz makes you think of “So I Married an Axe Murderer” (good flick, silly poetry), I implore you to check this out: this music is as thoughtful, engaging, urgent, and rousing as the best punk. –The Food Lion (International Anthem)
