HOTGUM: Self-titled: CS

Self-described as a “pleasure band,” Hotgum are a lo-fi, quirky indie rock ensemble from Portland, Ore. They’re certainly doing their own thing here with the seemingly planned disjointedness to the music mixed with ample amounts of saxophone, resulting in a no wave feel at times. The cadence of the vocal delivery combined with the overall delivery style sometimes reminds me of a young Mark E. Smith, while the humorous lyrical innocence and narrative style made me repeatedly think of the Slint offshoot band King Kong (specifically the Funny Farm LP, of which I am a big fan).
