HOMELESS GOSPEL CHOIR, THE / TEENAGE HALLOWEEN: Split: 12” EP

Mar 10, 2023

Although I’m not wild about the music on this split (complex traditional pop rock, anthemic and conventional pop punk), I do like their lyrics. Both bands are sorting out their social and political frustrations, trying not to be overwhelmed, figuring out what to give up and what they can hold onto and for how long. The Homeless Gospel Choir’s “Harrisburg Shoes” stands out with its combo of ’90s alt rock and vaguely Costello-esque melodic turns. But for both groups, the point is that they’re young and they feel everything, and when they say something you know they mean it. –Matt Werts (Don Giovanni, dongiovannirecords.com)
