HIDDEN RIFLES: Across the Neighborhoods: CD

Hidden Rifles—not to be confused with the Hidden Rifles from Dungarpur in Rajasthan, India—are comprised of Mike Watt (Minutemen, et al.), Norman Westberg (Swans), Mark Shippy (U.S. Maple), Jim Sykes (Invisible Things), and Matthew Wascovich (Scarcity Of Tanks). I’m not sure I like this or not, but I suspect that’s my shortcoming and not the band’s. The record comes off as slightly experimental, angular, occasionally discordant, and full-on off-center. Hidden Rifles seem to be rocking out at one moment, then exploring sonic swamps the next. I’m left wondering if this is one of those records that I need time to appreciate fully; Mike Watt projects always seem to be that way for me. Anyway, to make a waffley review even more so, if you’re all the way invested in any of these musicians, I suppose you’ll dig this. –The Lord Kveldulfr (Total Life Society)
