HELTER SKELTER: I Need You: 7”

May 23, 2018

Jesse Hector’s band Crushed Butler has been reissued several times and has become a proto-punk classic. His next project Helter Skelter didn’t last as long, but the band produced the glam classic “I Need You.” The song claps and stomps with emerging ‘71 glam enthusiasm. The Marc Boland-inspired vocals and hi-heeled strut walkabout jump beat is a high standard for the genre. “Goodbye Baby” has a similar stomp. The original mono single’s release was delayed and mostly forgotten, but has recently been reproduced by Just Add Water with the previously unreleased Kinks-esque strummer “I Live in Style in Maida Vale” included. It’s a no-brainer if you’re into Killed by Glam-era singles. –Billups Allen (Just Add Water, justaddwaterrecords.com)
