Like whatever judge it was who once said regarding pornography, I don’t know how to define the Midwestern sound, but I know it when I hear it. Heart And Lung have that sound, reminding me somewhat of early Jawbox gone savage and with better jokes. They also have enough harmony to entrance the wildest of feral children. Lyrically, Heart And Lung are melancholy to a degree, but with caustic and at times ridiculous humor that takes the edge off the nihilism and leaves one feeling somehow upbeat and ready for further punishment. It’s that classic Midwestern attitude: our whole life is February and June will never come and we’re fucked, but so what? Anyway, these rust-belters from Cleveland have got that sound and attitude in spades, and this whole record is a sack full of fun from start to finish. I’m absolutely sold on these fuckers. –The Lord Kveldulfr (Red Scare)
