GET SMART!: Oh Yeah No: CD

May 25, 2021

So, this is a release of six long-lost Get Smart! tracks from a 1987 recording session. Given that Get Smart! are originally from Lawrence, Kan., and relocated to Chicago, that might explain why they sound to me to be in the same vein as both Micronotz and Bloodsport, but not as interesting as either of those bands. This has a definite mid- to late-’80s vibe to it, reminiscent of that era when U.S. punk bands were becoming musically flexible and at times more experimental rather than writing stale and derivative hardcore tunes. I guess this sounds like a less experimental version of Th’ Inbred, were I to hazard a comparison, and maybe has a smattering of Leaving Trains running through it. The vocal harmonies on this are great, but overall I found the record to be somewhat conventional for its era. It’s not bad, but it just doesn’t land for me. –The Lord Kveldulfr (Capitol Punishment)
