FRENCH VANILLA: Self-titled: CD

Aug 02, 2017

L.A.’s French Vanilla gives me a lot of electropop vibes. Their post-punk feminist sound reminds me of Le Tigre meets Bratmobile with a saxophone. Dance-inducing bass lines, riffing guitar chords, and the ever-present saxophone back up lead singer Sally Spitz’s haunting and wailing vocals. This album has several saxophone-heavy songs, especially “Carrie,” a song influenced by the star of the cult horror film. Some of the topics on this album cover feminism, friendship, and global warming. “Social Trappings” reminds me a little of Peaches, and really makes me want to dance. –Cynthia Pinedo (Danger Collective)
