FRENCH GIRLS: Self-titled: CD

Jan 05, 2022

Maybe it’s just the band photos talking, but French Girls make me think of a garage rock version of the B-52’s. Maybe it’s also the quirky juvenility of the lyrical content (soda, pizza, ogling men in aerobics class) that makes that connection for me, but in a much more tenuous way. Anyway, French Girls play a kind of non-genre-specific punk rock that is simple and noticeably unburdened with musical virtuosity, but I get the impression that this crew would never aspire for Julliard. French Girls are stripped down and straightforward—and clearly meant to be so—but it doesn’t consistently hold my attention. Make of that what you will. –The Lord Kveldulfr (Rum Bar)
