FATHERFIGURES: Any Time Now … And High Time Too: CD

May 25, 2021

This arrived out of the blue and I immediately fell for the eclectic mix of The Psychedelic Furs, Half Man Half Biscuit, Gaye Bykers On Acid, and The Fall. This band is also not afraid to inject some humor into its lyrics, and, to its credit, is probably the first I’ve heard to sing about a toilet brush in “Brush.” It has the off-kilter drive of The Fall and the lyrical delivery that reminds me of HMHB whilst also having a number of moments which bring to mind the other two aforementioned bands from a musical perspective. Call this what you want—post-punk, new wave, indie—it’s probably all included here anyway so I’ll eschew any labelling and just say it’s a damn good album. –Rich Cocksedge (Self-released, [email protected])
